In Lithuania, one of the oldest operating lifts in Europe. In the first Republic of the Republic of Lithuania, the Kaunas residents faced a big problem: the Žaliakalnis district settled on the town's hill, with uncomfortable, slippery steps leading it. The city authorities have decided to overtake the time, and here was installed one of the most modern hoists in Europe, which has been in operation since 1931. In 1931, in order to attract more people, the first day of April, a funny joke appeared in the Kaunas press, telling us that a lift had been built, whose balancing needed ballast. Therefore, everyone who will take the funicular will receive 5 cents. |

In the 19th century, in the place where the Žaliakalnis funicular is now, there was the Kartofliškės Manor. At that time, famous poet Adam Mickiewicz, who taught in Kaunas, stayed there.
